Cotton is a product of great socio-economic importance to Brazil besides being a natural source of fiber, setting the country on the international stage as one of the largest producers, alongside China, India, the United States and Pakistan.
Importance to Economy?
Commercial cotton production started in the states of the Northeast region. The first major producer was Maranhão, in 1760, exporting to Europe the first bags of the product.
Currently it has great socio-economic importance to the country, besides being a natural source of fiber, setting the country on the international stage as one of the largest producers, alongside China, India, the United States and Pakistan.
The crop has great productive relevance in the states of Mato Grosso, Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais and Maranhao.
